About Coal & Coal Mining

Coal is a critical resource for both our community and our country.  The U.S. Energy Information Agency predicts that coal-fired energy will continue to be the largest source of U.S. electricity through 2035. At Sunrise, we work day and night to harness this essential natural resource using modern coal mining methods that are both high-tech and safe. Operating multiple underground mining units using the room and pillar mining approach, Sunrise mines millions of tons of high-quality bituminous coal each year.

Electricity Generation by Fuel

Coal Facts

  • Sunrise CoalCoal is abundant in the U.S. with more than 250 billion tons of recoverable coal reserves available—the equivalent of 800 billion barrels of oil—more than three times Saudi Arabia’s proven oil reserves.
  • Coal is the most cost-effective natural resources to harness; using coal generates electricity at less than one third of the cost of other fuels.
  • Coal is cleaner today than it was 30 years ago. New technology at power plants has lead to near-zero emissions for coal-fired electricity generation.
